Display/Driver Issues with Screen/Display - Horizontal multi-coloured lines on screen?

Has anyone experienced display issues recently?

These appear to be software based as opposed to hardware (screen isn't damaged - as can occasionally display fine, up until crash/error).

Typical symptoms will be after entering password and using for a little while a number of multi-coloured horizontal lines appear on screen. These lines move across the display, and often intensify in movement until the MacBook crashes and becomes unresponsive on screen only (cursor doesn't move).

Some of these crashes have occurred with Youtube and/or Spotify in the background and the shortcut pause/play, volume buttons continue to function with music/sound completely unaffected (playing via Bluetooth headphones).

Several restarts occasionally resolve the issue, MacOs recovery loads just fine (which makes me think software/driver) with no lines appearing.

I've reloaded the OS (latest update) which resolved the issue for two days or so before reappearing (thought it was fixed!).

MacBook is 2016, 13-inch, 2 Thunderbolt 3 Ports.

Images of back to back occurrences, showing a crash, operating fine (after several restarts), then crashing again - note user profile/UI seemingly unaffected by majority of stripes.

Vertical artifacts are typically a problem with the display itself not the GPU. Plugging into an external monitor to test would be telling since this comes directly from the GPU.

Horizontal lines I would expect GPU.

both are consider a hardware problem—

Thank you for the swift reply.

Plugged into a second display, which functioned fine even when the primary display froze again with the horizontal line.

So it appears to be running fine, but 'looks' like it is in a frozen state on the display.

Sounds like it is hardware (which is unfortunate)...

Thanks for the clarification/insight — isolated to projector cable/display/display assembly of some sort.

you can due diligence try both :

—Try resetting the  SMC How to reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support

—Try resetting NVRAM/PRAM Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

(get at least two-three rounds of the chimes when holding the NRAM Reset)

You can run the Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac - Apple Support

however any error code return is generic for display—

the way forward for service, you maybe be able to initiate that from My Support - Official Apple Support
