How to exit camera mode on iPad?
... because there doesn't seem to be a way :-( Help!

It sounds like you're wanting to close the Camera app, is that right? You can close the Camera app by force quitting it. Here's the steps for that: Quit and reopen an app on iPad - Apple Support.
