Cannot pair apple watch and iPhone 12 mini

Hello I reset my apple watch to connect it with my new phone as it was starting to pair the phone indicates i have to update the watch to be able to pair so i go ahead with it. it then indicates that my phone needs an update to update the watch. every single item on my phone got updated in reference to that request, so the phone is completely up to date. the app is not updating the watch and will not move past the screen that is supposed to accomplish it therefore cannot complete pairing. Please assist

What model of watch is it and what version of WatchOS is it running?.

What troubleshooting steps have you tried?.

What errror messages are you receiving?.

Has this watch ever been paired to another phone?(Very important).

Watch Series 1 - from what I have read online, it will work with the iPhone 12

I keep hitting a wall with troubleshooting :(

a) i don't even see the Watch App in my list of apps/cannot tell which version I am running.

I am not getting any 'error' messages. Once my phone was completely updated, it's not proceeding past the page where it is telling me the watch needs an update and I am not finding any troubleshooting tips for this.

The watch was paired, but somehow unpaired to my 6S. I stopped wearing the watch for a bit, once I tried to use it again, it was unpaired/wouldn't work. I have reset it during the process of trying to pair with the 12

to be more clear: it begins pairing, i get to the Software Update screen, where it tells me there is an update for the watch. searching for the update begins, then I receive the message " to update the software in you Apple Watch, you first need to update the software on your phone". Also a link to Settings displays.

The phone is up to date.

This is where I get stuck.

It's technically possible to pair a watch 1 or 2 to a newer phone,but in reality this is proving almost impossible for just about all the 1&2 owners on this forum.

Newer phone's require the watch to have updated hardware to cope with ios15 and unfortunately because of the age of these watches the hardware is very limited to what it can do.

Then there is the subject of storage,these watches have very little storage space and the average software update now requires gigabytes of space rather than megabytes and again these watches are very limited with the amount of storage space they have.

It is recommended that even a watch 3 should be unpaired and repaired in order to free up enough space to update.
