Unable to hear caller except when on speaker

My husbandI can’t hear anyone who calls him unless he puts the caller on speaker. Whoever calls can hear him but he can not hear the caller. The only way to use his phone is through putting it on speaker mode.

I have completely shut down the phone and have reset the phone.

He has an IPhone XR.
