Charging problems with my iPad

My iPad Pro recently developed the problem that it can no longer be charged by two new USB-to-Lightning cables. With one cable I receive the message that the cable is not supported, and the other cable simply does not work.

Both cables worked in the past and both look fine, no cracks or corrosion. The iPad can be charged with a much older and more worn-out and slightly cracked cable, and the two cables that no longer work with the iPad work fine with two different iPhones.

The iPad is five or six years old. I don’t think the problem is with the cables, and I wonder if something is starting to fail with the iPad, but it is a peculiar problem. Any idea what to do?

Are you using genuine Apple Lightning cables - or third-party alternatives? Many third-party alternatives are of dubious quality - and may not be manufactured to Apple’s tight tolerances or specifications. Lightning cables can be inserted either way up; if connection can be made in one orientation, but not the other, the cable is defective.

Troubleshooting generally requires substitution of the Power Adapter and cable for another known-good item. Be aware that most models of iPad require a Power Adapter rated at 12W or greater to reliably charge. 5W Power Adapters intended for older models of iPhone are inadequate to charge an iPad; if the iPad charges at all, charging will be very slow.

If you continue to experience difficulties when using an appropriate Power Adapter of 12W or greater, you might be best advised to seek assistance directly from from Apple Support - and request a remote diagnostic test.
