AirPods cut out on phone calls

My AirPods (6months old) have started cutting out while I am on phone calls (I am using an iPhone 12 mini and IOS 15.5). I have disconnected/reconnected, checked the Bluetooth and wifi but nothing seems to work. This only happens on a phone call and not with any other app. Is this a defect or something else?

Hello tvise,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We see that you're having trouble with your AirPods cutting out, and we'd like to help.

We appreciate the notes on troubleshooting you've already done. We do have some questions to help clarify what's going on, specifically with your phrase "cutting out".

Are your AirPods losing power suddenly in the middle of calls?

Is the audio cutting out for you hearing the other caller?

Is the caller advising that you are cutting out (your microphone)?

Do they have a good battery charge when using them on a call?

Are you near your iPhone when using them on a call?

Take a look at this article about Bluetooth interference to verify this isn't happening:

Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference

Then, if you have access to another iPhone, we'd recommend pairing them to that other device to test them with phone calls. This will help further rule out if the issue is specific with your iPhone or the AirPods. We look forward to hearing back from you.

Best regards.
