"Verification Failed" error when trying to erase and reset iPad2

Trying to follow instructions from support.apple.com on "what to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPad."

I have already set up my new iPad and all relevant data from the old device has been transferred to the new device.

I want to give the old iPad2 back to Apple to be scrapped. Before I do that, I need to erase it and get it back to factory settings with none of my personal info on it.

In the support article, Step 3 says, "Sign out of iCloud and the iTunes & App Store." Here's where the first problem occurred.

----At Settings > iCloud, I clicked "SIGN OUT" at the bottom of the screen.

----Responded to dialog Delete Account

----Received dialog box to enter Apple ID Password to turn off Find My iPad.

----Entered Apple ID Password, clicked TURN OFF

----Received error dialog VERIFICATION FAILED. THERE WAS AN ERROR CONNECTING TO THE APPLE ID SERVER.

Scrolled back up and noted that "Find My iPad" is still set to ON. I tried to turn it off and received the same error dialog: VERIFICATION FAILED. THERE WAS AN ERROR CONNECTING TO THE APPLE ID SERVER.

Therefore, I can't proceed with erase and reset. Can anyone explain this VERIFICATION ERROR and how to solve it?

The support page that you are following covers multiple scenarios. You’ve already successfully backed-up/transferred your data - and your intention is to scrap the device.

Other elements of the procedure are concerned with (a) “sanitising” the iPad before somebody else tries to use the iPad - and (b) in removing the Activation Lock. As the iPad is to be scrapped, you can work-around the error that you see…

You can simply erase the iPad from iPad Settings - and should you choose to do so, you can eliminate the active lock by signing-in to your AppleID account using a web-browser.

To fully erase/wipe your iPad from settings:

Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings

You can remove the iPad from your AppleID account by signing-in to your AppleID account using a web-browser:

https://appleid.apple.com

Select the devices tab where you can manage your trusted devices - and delete devices from your account.

LotusPilot: your reply was a good start! But I have a followup problem and question.

FOLLOWUP PROBLEM: at Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings, I go through several dialog boxes to confirm that I want to ERASE, ending with a dialog where I'm asked to Enter Apple ID Password. So I enter the password, and I'm right back at the error message VERIFICATION FAILED. THERE WAS AN ERROR CONNECTING TO THE APPLE ID SERVER. I am using the iPad2 in WiFi mode, connected to my local Comcast WiFi network.

Also, on the old iPad2, I was unable to access the appleid.apple.com webpage. I got a message SAFARI CANNOT OPEN THE PAGE BECAUSE IT COULD NOT ESTABLISH A SECURE CONNECTION TO THE SERVER.

FOLLOWUP QUESTION: I can access the appleid account using a web browser on my desktop computer. There I have the option to remove the iPad2 device from the account. IF I REMOVE THE OLD IPAD2 FROM THE APPLE ID ACCOUNT USING MY DESKTOP COMPUTER, WILL IT BE POSSIBLE TO GO BACK TO THE IPAD2 DEVICE ITSELF AND COMPLETE THE RESET/ERASE FUNCTION?
