Email Storage on External Hard Drive

How do I save emails onto an external hard drive and keep the emails in chronological order? Currently if I export emails as pdfs, they are re-ordered alphabetically and all are identified with the transfer date (created on) rather than the date of the original email.

It seems moving copies of the email to "On My Mac" folder that you create is a way to keep everything intact.

Moving mail out of Mail, creating PDF seems a nightmare in the making to keep organized, sorted by original date, and searchable....

IMAP accounts stay on the server

POP accounts remove from the server

"On My Mac" are just that, folders you create and remain on your Mac...
