Big Sur 11.6.6 permissions issues

I just upgraded to Big Sur 11.6.6 and now with every .pdf file I am opening in Preview I get told,

"---.pdf couldn't be opened because you don't have permission to view it."

To view or change permissions, select the item in the Finder and choose File>Get Info.

Why has this suddenly happened?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.6

There are 3 or 4 threads open on this all since 11.6.6, regarding both Mail and Outlook ... now this seems bigger than just mail apps but something inherent with the security fixes in 11.6.6 and in particular with Preview ... please file a bug report with Apple (use Feedback Assistant) ... this is a major inconvenience and it needs fixing, but that won't happen unless everyone with this issue takes 2 minutes and files a bug report so the matter percolates to the top :~)

Not sure about Mail but in Outlook )or with just stand alone PDFs) the only workaround seems to be quitting Preview, Word, Excel or whatever app is insisting on permissions, then it will open, but the next one won't unless you first quit the app ...

I have this problem too, but only since upgrading to 11.6.6

It has happened on a number of file types - pages, numbers, preview, excel word

There is a work around, by dragging and dropping on the application dock menu to open it, but it does not always work

The beauty of Apple was the simplification of tasks and not having to implement workaround solutions which take more time or break up work flow

As a Mac user since the 1980's, I would have expected better from Apple

If Apple freezes Big Sur at 11.6.6, the least they can do is change the name to Big Sure. I upgraded a client to Big Sure 11.6.5 from High Sierra - long story/software limitations... and it was a nightmare waiting to happen. Look up the mdworker file issue.

Fortunately I caught that little minefield after one computer and did the work to get past that bug and got Big Sure installed on all of their computers, but it's _really_ ugly. the mdworker bug makes this permissions bug look puny.

I can't upgrade this client to Monterey on all their machines because I'm still at a software limitation, but I have upgraded a few of their machines that I can to Monterey and so far, Monterey is better in a lot of ways - fixes this opening files/permissions bug, Remote Desktop is _much_ more stable, and it is actually faster - for starts.

We are using the workaround for now, but if I can I'm leaving Big Sure far behind ASAP. The 11.6.6 update really didn't help.

I've been using Apple products and FileMaker/Claris on thousands of computers since 1987, and this is reminiscent of some of the days of System 8 and 9 - yuck.

Well that's interesting - my client that is having the 11.6.6 permissions issues creates a TON of pdfs that attach via scripting to emails using FileMaker 19. These pdfs are saved to a network share. I do their FileMaker work, and we are not having issues with saving any of these pdfs.

I'll look at printing them - but we don't print much - but if we couldn't create pdfs I would be in a world of hurt.

It looks like my screenshots didn't show in my prior message.

Here's one

Here's a link to one of the Permission error messages.

Hopefully you can access the screenshots at these two links.

Let me know if you are able to reproduce this error on your machine with printing from Safari.

@fidiniaina

You're welcome. Unfortunately it does seem so.

I know you were documenting a similar issue to mine, but would you be able to verify the printing to pdf www.google.com in Safari with the "Open in Preview" option to see if you get the permissions issue I described above?

I'm assuming it's everyone but maybe I just need to reinstall big sur.

Thanks

Having the same issue after updating to 11.6.6 when trying to open any Microsoft documents (PPT, Word, Excel) that are attached in Outlook. When attempting to open, the Outlook temp folder pops open and the attachment shows up in the folder requesting additional permissions and that I grant access. Prior to updating to 11.6, the permissions issue didn't exist. I'm still able to open the document once I grant access, but this seems to be a new step introduced by Apple to avoid opening up a file with viruses?

Tried emptying Microsoft cache folder in Library, but still having the same issue.

I appreciate the extra security step, but it's a bit of a PIA to have to grant access to every single Microsoft attachment.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Monterey will have two more years of security fixes. Big Sur will have another one. At least that would be following the pattern. You will, however, not see bug fixes that just affect the usability of Big Sur. In reality, this set of updates to Big Sur, given that Monterey had already been out, was out of the norm to begin with.

Presumably, if Big Sur is the latest it can run, your computer is a 2014 model or oder. You will have gotten nine years of use out of it, before you have to worry about unplugged security holes. That’s pretty good, if you ask me. I don’t think, Windows users hold on to their laptops for that long. Plus, those don’t have the build quality that Apple systems have had.

My computer is a late 2013 MacBook Pro, 13" retina display, with 16 GB RAM und 1 TB SSD. While it is true that this machine has lived a lot longer than any Windows laptop I ever saw.... it is exactly the reason why I bought it, and why I configured it "premirum". Any MacBook Pro Apple came up with in the meantime came with less connectivity, keyboard flaws, or weird "innovations" like the missing function keys. In short, my machine could run a few years longer...

11.6.7 Not made the blindest difference. what is wrong with Apple. These devices are becoming increasingly frustrating to use. No spell check and unable to open files which basically renders imail utterly useless, but then who needs their emails working?? Apple clearly more interested in sales than retaining customers. This is utterly appauling. It's such basic fundemental stuff. When the **** are they going to fix it?
