Migration assistant says not enough free space

Migrating iMac 2011 to iMac 2022 24”. Migration assistant says not enough free space to complete migration. How can this be? My old iMac has plenty of space.

How much data is on the old Mac and how much storage is on the new Mac?

For example, if your old Mac had 650 GB of data on it and the new Mac has 512GB of storage then your migration will fail due to not enough space.
