Hi Ericek56

S.M.A.R.T stands for Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System and was introduced to determine if mechanical hard drives are about to fail. They check themselves against predefined thresholds and keep a record of it.

MacOS shows only the SMART status in one word in Disk Utility (in the Disk Utility App).

If all is well, it says "Checked." If you want to know more details, e.g. how many hours the hard disk has been in use, you can download the SMART utility. It can be started four times for free and shows all important data.

SSDs partly still support the SMART status, although it was actually intended for quite error-prone mechanical disks. Apple's internal NVMe SSDs used from 2015 onwards usually show "not supported" in Disk Utility because Apple believes it is no longer necessary with this modern technology. However, the SMART Utility brings some values to light.

You can download the SMART Utility here:

You may need to install a driver for the SMART Utility app to read the hard disk.

Make a backup of your MacBook. Your model is from 2017 and might already have defective SSD/hard drive areas (model A1708). Of course, the Battery is not the problem.
