I have a 2015 MBP. Where's the best place to back up before I update to Monterey? Any glitches after updating?

Follow lllaass's advice on the internal Apple SSD. If your internal SSD is still the original Apple one, you should be ok with the firmware update.

I got my wife a new M1 iMac and I took over her 2016 iMac that she was still running Sierra (10.12.6) on. I updated that 2016 iMac to High Sierra, then Mojave, then Catalina, and then Monetary (skipped Big Sur). Everything updated smoothly. I could even still print on our 2011 Canon 8120 printer/scanner and 2015 Epson XP-820 printer/scanner but reinstalled the drivers just in case. I haven't seen any glitches on Monterey.

You need an Apple SSD installed in order to upgrade to Monterey.

The Monterey upgrade includes an update to the Mac's firmware and the update hase to temporarily write to an Apple SSD to update the mac's firmware during a reboot. If no Apple SSD the upgrade to Monterey and the firmware update terminates.

One you upgrade to Monterey with Apple SSD you can reinstall a non-Apple SSD and then upgrade to and run Monterey w/o problems.
