We understand that you're only able to connect to an EDGE network while you're roaming.

Your carrier determines how your iPhone connects to their cellular network based on how your account is provisioned for your carrier. The iPhone itself doesn't include a feature which would allow you to adjust the network it's connected to. If you need to change the network your iPhone connects to, you can contact your carrier and have them provision your account to connect to that network.

Your carrier’s EDGE (GSM) network is available, and your iPhone can connect to the internet over that network.

It is up to the provider to decide what levels of service that they will provide, and which types of phones will be allowed to connect to the network. Most providers in the U.S. have either discontinued 3G service, or they will in the near term, for example.

Your phone will try to connect to the best service that is available at the time. If your phone is connecting to EDGE abroad, that may be the best that you can do at that location.
