Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

I've been using mac laptops for over a decade now - and all models from air to MBP... And never had issues. Real issues.

This is first time I doubted paying £4000 for a laptop that would stop charging for no reason mid work. Good I caught it today before it went trough the whole battery. I distinctly know that this time (as this happened 2-3 times now and even logged feedback - bug) it 'pinged' and showed icon that it started charging battery. And then, halfway through it just stopped charging and continued working on the battery. As many reported it only started happening after 12.4 update (along with removing clearly visible keyboard layout and replaced it with illegible two letter code).

It is quite embarrassing to admit how much I paid for laptop that can't even charge its own battery reliably. It feels that (software) quality control started slipping since Apple haven't added any significant, serious feature to their OS (Safari/Photos and such auxiliary programs do not really count).

That is, of course, unless one had changes they made to their power settings. They must then re-enable those settings, provided they remember what they were. I'd imagine most will if they had changes.

It doesn't seem simpler. It's just an alternative method. One involves downloading and installing a third-party solution (which will also require "full disk" access. The other restores defaults using Terminal; to my own surprise many do not know what Terminal is.

Optimized battery charging is not new to 12.4. The thread clearly states "after installing 12.4". I had no issue prior to 12.4 with this. Also, going off of memory, I believe that when it is not charging due to optimized charging the Mac will show a status to that effect. And, in my case, the battery level was at 34%--well below the 80% cap in optimized charging.

This issue no such notification, and appears if optimized charging is set to on or off. Whether plugged in to USB C or the Magsafe port, the Mac refuses to charge. On the Magsafe, it shows an amber status; on USB C there is zero draw.

When mac stops charging - it stops using USBC for other purposes - connecting monitor for instance... Also optimised charging wouldn't allow battery to drop below 20% while I happened to me to get batter that low as I failed to spot it is not charing while connected to charger (yes - original charger and original cable)...

Interesting though - with magsafe it shows amber light as if it is to charge...

Revive or restore a Mac with Apple silicon using Apple Configurator - Apple Support

Yeah you gave this link already and nobody marked it as helpful or commented that it works.

Very reluctant to even try this given that:

  • Nobdy has indicated this risky procedure is helpful, commented that it works or selected it as the answer.
  • The article you linked describes a risky procedure for a non-responsive system wich is not the case here.
  • This laptop is brand new so I am very doubtful that restoration is needed.
  • The issue appears to be software related.
  • It took quite a while to get this thing setup for work so I'm def, not keen on erasing it.

I don't think many people would have tried it so far either but I could be wrong tho, if anyone has done this can they comment if it indeed fixed the issue?

OnyX has been around for many years, and has been updated in a timely manner for each new OS since, I think, Jaguar 10.2...

It serves as an easy way to run the tasks it clearly documents. It is a trusted application that I have used many times, though curiously I have not found the need for using it in some years. I am glad that it helped. I just wanted to sound in with a reassuring comment about OnyX.
