Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.
NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;
• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)
• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
• Disables user-installed fonts
• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files
Running Onyx fixed it for me, or else it was that one extra reboot. Reboots before that were only temporary.
Monterey 12.5 has just been released. Maybe that got fixed.
The pmset option has worked for me, and it's much simpler than the OnyX approach:
Open Terminal.app, type "pmset restoredefaults", hit return, then reboot.
Charging has worked fine for me ever since doing that.
I tried "safe boot" when I first had the issue. It didn't make a difference for me--the issue still cropped up. My general recourse for issues post updates is to try a safe boot if something wonky happens. When I was on an earlier Macs, I also threw in an SMC and PRAM reset for good measure.

Running Onyx did the trick from late May until today. It's really funny, because just before the problem came back I was thinking of posting here to ask if anyone found the Onyx fix was not permanent.
Last uptime was 27 days, and the reboot before that was not because of the charging problem. Alas. Just ran Onyx and of course rebooted. Charging back up now.
I might as well comment. I've had this problem ever since the update and it happens to be several times a day if I'm moving my laptop from one place to another.
I've spoken to Apple twice so far, including an escalated call with no resolution so far.
Things I've tried (with nothing helping at all):
Completely re-installed mac os x (Apple recommended)
Apparently there is no SMC to reset on these computers and rebooting is equivalent which is "why it starts charging again after reboot"
So at this point I'm not sure what I can do but contact them a third time to see. It's hard to reproduce this state on command since it seems to have to be unplugged for some amount of time before it stops working.
It's been like this for a really long time at this point and it's pretty frustrating.
I have exact same experience. It seems to only come back when I go between office and home and use the USB-C charger. So if computer stays plugged in for 2 weeks in the office it won't come back. As soon as I take it from USB-C (2 screen setup + charging) and come back to try to charge it again the issue is there until reboot.
I have the same issue. It starts charging if I reboot. If I unplug and use it for a while then plug it back in, it doesn't charge and I have to reboot again. Issue started when I get the 12.4 update.
Its not about charging actually, when it happens the Macbook doesn‘t recognize any peripherals, so also the external monitor doesn‘t work.
I had it once now working again after simply plugging it in anew. That‘s new.
I wanted to update that I had temporary success using Onyx… then it came back.
then I noticed the problem only would come back when I would switch back and fourth between my office and home. At home I have a MagSafe charger and in my office I have a USB… I replaced the USB one with another MAgsafe charger and the problem hasn’t come back for two weeks.
what I gather from this is that it’s either a problem going between the two, or with the USB chargers in general. Does anyone have this problem that doesn’t use a USB charger at times?
I am surprised to find this thread and, apparently, nobody seems to have considered this - or did I miss it?
This is a new feature that tries to learn about the charging routines in order to prolong battery life.
This would be my first suspicion upon seeing that a mac would stop charging.
I understand your hesitation and it being brand new, but have come across this and other similar situations on new machines. As long as you keep a backup, there is no risk, other than perhaps going without your computer while it’s fixed, (If you don’t have the correct equipment to do so). You’re correct, the issue is most likely software related, and the firmware acts as a bridge between the software and hardware. This is just my personal opinion from what I’ve seen, especially the last few years, take my advise or not, otherwise, hope you find another solution.
This issue was happening to me every 2-3 days. Since I tried the OnyX solution mentioned earlier in the thread, it has not happened since. I was a bit nervous using a third-party solution, but I have full backups and surmised that the worst that could happen is the requirement for a full restore.
Knock on wood, my hope is that it will continue to be without this issue until Apple issues a fix.
Same issue. If the machine goes to sleep and then I wake it up, it no longer detects any incoming power supply. It doesn't matter if it's the Apple-supplied power adapter or a 3rd party USB-C charger. No power in any form until I perform a reboot. The reboot restores the power input (charging) again. This very clearly started with the 12.4 update. Never had an issue before.
