macOS skips DEP/ADE enrollment step

This is a bump of the previous question on the same topic. At the time the question was asked, AC for iPhone was still in Beta, and the ability to enroll a machine into ABM was not yet generally available.

With these systems and applications now generally available, I'm still unable to find a documented process to properly troubleshoot the issue. There are well-known workarounds for this issue that continue to work fine for Catalina, but there is no available process provided directly by Apple.

For reference, the serial number has been triple-checked in ABM and our ADE-enabled machines MDM. The machine was able to be successfully enrolled using the Catalina workaround. Upgrading this machine to Monterey still shows that it is configured for DEP when running profiles status -type enrollment but after performing Erase All Content & Settings on Monterey, the machine skips the enrollment step the next time Setup Assistant is run.

How should an admin proceed when the DEP step is skipped?

Yes. It is and has remained in ABM throughout the process.

I spoke with a friendly support rep on their Enrollment hotline earlier and they had me walk through this process, which has corrected the issue for the machine in question:

  • Unassign the problem machine from any MDM in ABM
  • Sync DEP-enabled machines in your MDM, confirm it no longer appears
  • Re-associate the machine with the MDM of choice in ABM
  • Once again sync DEP-enabled machines in your MDM, confirming it now appears again

After walking through the above process and then performing an Erase All Content & Settings on the machine, I received the Remote Management pane during Setup Assistant.
