Bluetooth anomolie

I have just discovered the probable cause of my Big Sur slowdown problem. I am using BlueTooth to transfer files between Big Sur (11.4) and El Capitan (10.11) for quite some time. While small file do not have any appreciable affects, large ones are the problem as I just tried to transfer a 6.44gb file from El Capitan to Big Sur and now that is doing the exact same thing as Big Sur has been doing for some time now.

The slowness, especially switching between parts of a program; i.e. hand entry to find/change function seem to indicate the computer is using hard drive storage instead of using RAM storage. That is the only thing that seems logical, in my opinion.

I just wonder if there is a way to fix both the Bluetooth AND slowdown? short of having to reload the OSs from TimeMachine which I am extremely leary of because of a snaffu a couple of years ago that wiped my entire backup external drive.

The use might be Better served having an Large Enough Capacity External Drive, formatted as HFS Journaled / GUID, and " transfer a 6.44gb file " to the external drive.

Then attach the external drive to whichever of the computer and movie it into place on that computer.

Yes Bluetooth will transfer small files but 6.44GB is beyond reasonable expectation IMHO

Lastly - the current version of Big Sur is version 11.6.6 as of May 16, 2022 - ( May 26, 2021. Big Sur macOS 11.4 ( 20F71 )

It is also way a good idea to keep the computer up to date for Bug and Security reasons.

I sort of gathered that about 10 hours into that transfer attempt BUT that was not the question.

I have run 'first aid' but everything shows good.

Q - " WHY did BOTH my machines act as if they are not using RAM for work storage? "

A - RAM = Random Access Memory. RAM stands for Random Access Memory and it provides storage for ongoing tasks and processes. The difference between the RAM and the rest of the storage on your Mac is that it's faster, therefore your Mac is designed to keep certain things in RAM in order to speed things up.

It will fill-up as Applications are Loaded in the RAM.

RAM usage will decrease after the Application is Closed and removed from RAM by the Operating System

Drive Storage is the Capacity of the Internal Drive. That is finite and once there is not Enough Empty Space on the Internal Drive - file transfers will not work - period.

There has been sufficient advise / suggestions offered for the User to make an informed and educated choice what the next course of action is required.

That is unless there is some undisclosed Agenda in play

The suggestions have been put forth on a volunteer basis, in good faith and in the best interests of the computer.

Just to add the latest, Big Sur seemed to return to normal after a week of turning it off every night but El Capitan has gotten even slower over the same time.

I have transferred, via USB drive, the most important items on El Capitan to Big Sur and now trying to find out IF a restore from backup would possibly restore the system to usability. The major problem is that this is a dual boot system, El Capitan could not go on the limited internal HD so had to put 10.8 on the internal then load El Capitan onto an external 1T HD. Would the restore from backup cause both to be restored or, like what happened the last time, totally wipe my 1T drive just because I had used it as my backup before? This cost losing many years of backups because of that anomoly.

In other words, RAM is not emptying when I turn off my computers such that the SYMPTOMS remain every time I boot them after MISSUSING Bluetooth File Exchange on both machines? And yes, it is quite obvious that the computers are LOADING to my Backup Hard Drives when they are turned on for the boot procedure.

Very impressive background and thank you so sharing but - this may have some bearing on systems of that era which may not do much good now.

To compare - first of first computer I had was x386 Intel with 4 GB RAM and a Rotational Drive with 20 GB and running Windows 3.1.1 First, Apple Computer was a Powerbook PPC Motorola CPU with OS X Tiger 10.4.

All this background was useful then but ceases to the relevant with the progress in Technology and Operating Systems of today.

Q - " In other words, RAM is not emptying when I turn off my computers such that the SYMPTOMS remain every time I boot them after "

A - RAM was explained in detail earlier. RAM is only used when the computer is turned ON and empties when the computer is turned Off.

I guess I just, for some reason, am unable to get across what is happening which, on both computers, began just after doing a moderately long Bluetooth File Exchange on Big Sur and attempting that very long file exchange on El Capitan. Both computers were noticeably slower after completion or forced stop but expected them to clear after doing a 'restart' BUT no noticeable change on either one. Prior to those exchanges, both were close to normal for their age. I even posted on here a couple of days following the Big Sur slowdown but all I got was advice to get a new computer, but a little more diplomatically. Since these were both late t night, I closed out both of them overnight and after starting up the next day (Big Sur was several months ago) noticed as soon at I pressed the start buttons my backup drives began doing something and loading the OS was extremely slow. Also noticed that when logging in that as soo as I hit return the backup drive would start flashing doing something. Again, after loading something for internet access every time I press return the HD would go haywire doing something AND sometime it would take over a minute to access and load whatever I was doing.

BTW; The El Capitan computer is set up dual boot with 10.8 on the internal and 10.11 on an external 1T HD as there is not enough space on the internal HD for the OS..

I have noted that the 'graphic HD usage display' shows considerable 'unused' space on both the 4T (Big Sur Backup) and the 3T (El Capitan dual boot backup). Just for grins, I ran 'First Aid' and it reported no problems for either drive.

Mucho Gracias for all
