imac slow

Hi,

my iMac late 2015 has become quite slow, even with 16GB. EntreCheck showed yesterday Hard-drive is failing, but I’ve run Recovery Mode diagnostic and it shows everything is all right. Today's Entrecheck shows not major issues. I'm posting both reports.

I’m thinking if the problem isn’t in the macOS. I’m running Monterey 12.4, but maybe I should downgrade to perform faster. Could this be the issue?

Thanks for every suggestion

Tom

Thanks for your suggestions. VPN and Cleaner are gone. What should be an average speed of my HHD?

Your Apple HDD should perform around 60-90MB/s in good condition. Yours is a little below that, but even at full speed the hard disk has the potential to make the iMac slow.

This is why I recommended the external SSD solution, or upgrading to a new iMac.

Hi!

ProtonVPN OpenVPN

Unless this is required by your school or employer, I recommend you uninstall this VPN. It can cause performance issues, security issues, and make macOS appear buggy. Take a look at: How to uninstall apps on your Mac - Apple Support.

If you want a VPN service, I recommend iCloud Private Relay: About iCloud Private Relay - Apple Support.

CCleaner

Mac computers do not need any sort of anti-virus, cleaners, etc. The only thing they are good at is creating false marketing promises and taking consumers' money. In fact, anti-virus and other cleaners cause performance issues, security issues, and make macOS appear buggy. Your Mac is far worse with these types of Apps installed.

Uninstall this as well: How to uninstall apps on your Mac - Apple Support.

APPLE HDD HTS541010A9E662 1.00 TB (Mechanical - 5400 RPM)

Other than that, the reason your iMac is slow is due to the 5400-rpm hard drive. While this hard drive found in your Mac is perfectly suited to light tasks, such as email, web browsing, etc., for more advanced tasks, and for users who want the maximum performance from their Mac, this hard drive does have its limitations. Luckily, you can use an external SSD as your startup disk to run macOS and all your data from that. It will make your Mac 10 to 30 times faster for storage, and in turn, make your entire Mac system much faster. For more info, instructions, and what external SSD to buy, please see: How to Setup and Use an External SSD as your Startup Disk on a Desktop Mac - Apple Community.

Another option is to replace this Mac with a new Apple Silicon Mac: Mac - Apple. If you go this route, it is generally recommended that you purchase 16GB of Memory with the largest SSD that you can afford. You can also use Apple Trade-In to get credit towards a new Mac: Apple Trade In - Apple.

Hope this helps!

Welcome!

Both reports have the same timestamps and appear to be identical:

Please repost the second one after reading the "how to copy" information below.

1) The hard drive appears to be approaching "too full" status:

Mounted Volumes:

disk1s1 - Macintosh HD - Data [APFS Virtual drive]

        1000.00 GB (Shared - 912.89 GB used, 85.98 GB available, 70.07 GB

A good guideline is to keep 10% free space.

2) The failing hard drive flag is, I suspect, triggered by this:

Performance:

    System Load: 2.31 (1 min ago) 1.55 (5 min ago) 1.50 (15 min ago)

    Nominal I/O speed: 0.01 MB/s

    File system: 32.36 seconds

    Write speed: 23 MB/s ⚠️

    Read speed: 25 MB/s ⚠️

A healthy drive with the same specs should be doing 70-80MB/sec, and that will still feel slow. Yours is barely moving data.

3) Your report became someone corrupted so I'l wait to see the real second report before making further observations.

NOTE! When you copy Etrecheck reports, DO NOT highlight and copy from the report itself. I think that is what put all the spurious characters in your current versions. Use the Copy Report option under Etrecheck's "Share" icon to copy without highlighting anything:
