49 inch ultrawide monitors

Hello all,

I have a 13 inch Mac and I am trying to scale to the monitor. It appears, after reading Internet articles, this is a significant problem for the 13 inch MacBook Pro. I can not get the PC to scale appropriately to 5120x1440. Instead, I have just an over stretched screen. Any suggestions, outside of buying a PC?

Thank you,

trish hi - not sure how apple hasn't released proper info on this - but 49 inch monitors just plain don't work on Mac studio.

Thanks for your comments, but the reason Apple has not posted that is because it is not strictly true. The details are much more nuanced that you imply.

MacBook Pro from 2016 and older can not support displays over 4096 pixels over ONE cable -- but they do work when connected with two cables.

MacBook Pro from 2017 and later CAN support displays wider than 4096 over one cable, but they must be running MacOS 11 Big Sur or later to do so.

In every case, the specs of the interfaces are running up against the laws of Physics, and the maximum switching speeds of semiconductors. Therefore, top-speed-rated cables are required, and any docks involved must support the appropriate versions of their interfaces as well.

Hi fdh172,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities! Sounds like you are looking to adjust the screen size to fit your external display, do we have that right? If so, you'll want to go to the Apple menu ( ) > System Preferences > Display.
