I'm changing my SIM card on my iphone 12 pro max to a Softbank SIM card because I want to use my phone in Japan. Will I need to "unlock" my phone before doing this? I've actually tried inserting a the new Softbank SIM card and the phone does not show any notices or error messages. Will I be able to use my phone without unlocking it in Japan? Or will I need to call T-Mobile to unlock the phone? Thanks

If the new SIM gives you no problems, you should be okay.
For your peace of mind, I'd contact the previous cellular carrier and ask them if your iPhone is totally unlocked, to avoid any surprises while you are abroad.
