Can I update to High Sierra from El Captain 10.11.6. or do I first have to install Sierra? A mid-2012 Macbook Pro can support up to mac OS 10.15 "Catalina." Yes, were it mine I would do 10.13 first, then decide on whether to go higher. Mojave is fine but Catalina will not run your older apps.

That error sounds like an issue with an outdated browser. What browser are you using?

Many computers that were not kept updated began to show certificate errors last September, when a major supplier of security certificate to web devleopers replaced the old version with one that does not support El Capitan.

All other troubleshooting ideas did not work.

We don't knw what those are. Different sources show different steps.

The most likely issue—and easiest to check—is that an older, outdated version of the installer is already in your Applications folder. Check for that and, should you find one, delete it.

Where did you find the installer? If posted on a non-Apple site, it is likely out of date and potentially dangerous.
