How do I eject a CD from my usb superdrive when the drive is not recognised by my iMac?
As we don't know which of the 24 years of iMacs you have, I can only suggest a trick that worked on older models. Restart the computer while holding the mouse button down. A wired moue is best for this.
If that does not work, you will probably have to find a computer that recognizes the drive and use that to eject the disk.
If you fill in some details on iMac sub-model, macOS version, any warmings or advisories you see, and confirm this is an Apple superdrive and not some other brand, maybe we can offer more. It's hard to answer with almost no info in a venue where helpers can neither see nor remotely access you computer. Right now you have us guessing, and most of the senior helpers are just that —seniors. We don't guess as well as we did 50 years ago!
Thanks - I tried restarting with a wired mouse. With the usb superdrive connected the restart froze; without it connected the restart completed but the drive was then not recognised.
iMac Retina 4K 21.5-inch, 2019 (bought in March 2021!); processor speed 3.8 GHz, 8 GB; macOS 12.4
USB superdrive-ZML, bought February 2022.
I think I've described the problem: I put a CD in the drive and it is not recognised, although I can hear the drive trying to work.
I suspect I shall have to throw the USB superdrive away.
Terminal is an app which can be found in the Utilities folder which is inside the Applications folder. When you run Terminal you get a very basic looking command line interface, just type drutil eject external , and press enter. You can close Terminal afterwards.
I take it all back!
Ten minutes after my last attempt at running drutil and after I had closed down the utility, the CD was ejected. It appeared in front of me as if by magic.
Thanks Mall-S, especially, and Alan Jones.
Thanks for taking the time to instruct me.
I have tried the command, but it does not work.
Try this.
Open Terminal and type in "drutil eject external " then press enter
Thanks for the suggestion, but . . . Silly question: how do I "Open Terminal"? I am as you can see very ignorant (and cautious) about the technicalities.
