CardDAV account password error fix

CardDAV account password problems. Here's the fix.

My partner's phone started having this problem today. When he saved a contact, it would not save into Contacts. It sometimes could be found by searching from the home screen. He was getting constant "enter your google CardDAV account password" dialogs. His usual google/gmail password returned error every time.

the only discussions I found on here had an apple employee punting it to google. I found this solution on google's help forum and thought I'd make someone's life easier by posting it here.

Went to Settings > Contacts > Accounts and toggled the Google one to off, making it inactive. Instantly fixed the problem. He successfully saved a contact and easily found it in the contacts app.

cardDav is the old way google used to sync with mac. I think you don't need it anymore, esp if you've already got gmail account listed. Seems it was confusing the phone.
