Download current iPhone photos to older MacBook?

Can I download my current iPhone photos to an older Mac?( with hard drive space, but not running the latest iOS?)

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.13

I don’t see why not. If you have problems then upload your photos to icloud and then download them to wherever you need, MacBook, iMac, iPhone, etc.
