Use a WD Red Plus 6TB NAS HDD drive as an external drive with Mac

Hi.

I just bought a WD Red Plus 6TB NAS drive. My intention is to use it as a normal storage disk with my MacBook Pro using an adapter to USB. I chose a NAS drive as they are supposed to have a superior build to "normal" drives. They included sensors to sense shaking, in order to avoid damage to the writing heads. I am not interested in using it as a NAS drive, just as a storage drive.

I have other 3.5" disk from Samsung which I could format with Macs Extended Journal File Format while connected to my Mac.

When I connected the drive to my Mac, it won't recognize it, neither in Disk Utility nor using the diskutil list command in terminal.

I connected the disk to a Windows PC. There, in the disk manager, the disk was shown. The disk space was not allocated, I allocated it and now it shows as an NTFS drive.

My Mac, however will still not recognize the drive.

Has anybody an idea how I could make my Mac recognize the disk, so I can change the file format to

Extended Journal File Format?

Any other comments are appreciated.

Thanks beforehand

Max

The problem was the adapter. I got a proper enclosure and now it works just fine.

NAS and Server drives have another issue you might encounter. Since server drives are expected to rarely spun down, they take a remarkably long time spin down.

If you do an ordinary Restart, you may find that the drive is not done spinning down in time to be ready to go when the Mac is ready, and therefore does not mount at startup.

One work-around is when you want to Restart, choose Shutdown instead, count to ten, then start up. Problem gone.
