Notifications on Watch

I have a series 6 watch. Usually when my phone is locked my watch vibrates when I get a message. Unless I actively look at my watch it doesn't tell me I have received one. Also when I set an alarm, my phone goes off but my watch doesn't. I have tried going through the notification settings on my watch app but nothing seems to be doing any good. Help please.
