If you sync with iCloud, and enable desktop and documents, your files remain on your Mac and sync to iCloud. You'll want to review your settings to ensure that optimize Mac storage is not turned on (System Preferences > Apple ID > iCloud) as turning on optimize will offload files if space is needed on your Mac.

iCloud is a synchronization service, not a traditional backup. Anything you do to a file on your Mac is also changed in iCloud. Deleting a fie on your Mac or in iCloud will also delete it from the other location.

If you sync with iCloud, your files remain on your Mac. If you enable optimize Mac storage, then your oldest/largest may be offloaded to iCloud only if space is needed on your Mac.

Back up your Mac using Time Machine (or similar). At present, there is no iCloud backup option for your Mac.

Thank you. So I cannot select folders from "documents and desktop" to stay on my mac AND back up. This feature is available in other storage programs for PC such as "BOX" and also "one drive".

I need rapid access to a powerpoint presentation weekly but get stymied when I have to download the file immediately before the presentation on slow wifi. Suggestions?
