Can't update iPad through iTunes? Help!

My iPad is really out-of-date, so much so that the software update says I have to connect the iPad to iTunes on a computer in order to update to the latest software. I downloaded the newest version of iTunes onto my computer, connected my iPad to the computer, opened my device on iTunes, backed up the device onto the cloud, then clicked "update"... I have tried so many times, but I keep getting the error message "There was a problem downloading the software for the iPad. The network connection timed out". I tried many troubleshooting suggestions I found online, but none of them worked. Both the computer and the iPad are connected to a very strong wifi. The latest version of iTunes is installed. My antivirus/firewalls/security software are not the cause either. DNS is not the cause either. I'm at a loss of how to update my iPad. Are there any other suggestions that might make the update successful?

iPad Air, iOS 9

We cannot verify this as you have given us no version numbers of iTunes, iPadOS, or Windows.

Actually, the latest version of iTunes is 12.12.4.1. Is that what you have? It requires a reasonably current Windows version (10 or later).

And, of course, we don't know which iPad model and vintage you have. Your profile suggests you have an iPad Air. The original iPad Air, released by Apple in 2013, cannot run an iPadOS version greater than 12.5.5.

My iTunes says: Version 12.12.4.1. That is the most current.

My iPad software is 9.3.2, it specifically says under general settings, software updates iOS 12 "A software update is available for your iPad. The version of iOS running on your iPad does not support wirelessly updating to this version of iOS. Please connect your device to iTunes on a computer to update to the latest software." When I go to update it on iTunes, it acts as if it will, and about a minute into retrieving the update, I receive the error message in my original post. I have no issues syncing and backing up the iPad, just downloading the latest iPad software update.
