Bright box on desktop of external display after using Screenshot

I'm running Monterey 12.3.1 on an iMac with an external display. After using the Screenshot app, I'm seeing a bright box on the display that is there on the desktop or on any window that is put over it. It can't be moved or cleared. The only way I've found to remove it is to restart the computer, but on using the screenshot function again, it returns. It's really annoying.


I've found no reference to this issue anywhere on-line. It appears to be a new bug. Anybody else had this, or can solve it?

It looks like you're doing a screen recording instead of a snapshot. Look for a button like this in the menu bar. It's a stop recording button:



What key combination are you using to take the screenshot? These are the default key combinations. Make sure you're using the one to take a screenshot instead of a recording:
