Getting error code (0x80092010) when trying to restore. Can't find it mentioned anywhere

I have an xs. Turned off phone and tried turning it back on. Blinking apple logo. I've tried everything to reset / restore. I keep getting code (0x80092010). I can't find anywhere online that mentions this code. Any help would be appreciated

That is normally a communication error when connecting to a computer. Try a different cable and a different port. If you are using a desktop computer only use the rear ports. If you are using a hub make sure it is a powered one.

I get the same error code no matter what cable or port I use. I have tried 4 cables and 4 different USB ports all with the same result. I also get the same error code whether I try to update the iPad or restore it. Is there anything else I can try or should I take it to an Apple store?

I'm having the same issue. I reset Corporate iPhones for work and I'm getting this error message when I try to update and restore iPhones using iTunes:

The iPhone software update server could not be contacted. An unknown error occurred (0x80092010)

I have multiple Windows PCs, iPhone 6s, iPhone 7s, iPhone 11s, and a plethora of first party Apple USB to Lightning cables.

I've tried a number of combinations (iPhone 7s with one PC, then with another with a different cable, etc) but I'm getting the same error message for all. I also connected one of my laptops to my mobile hotspot to rule out any local network issues, and I'm getting the same issue.

Please advise when this is fixed.

I checked my Itunes (window 10) for updates and it was current - so I'll definitely uninstall and reinstall iTunes again in case the USB drivers are out of date.

Good first step.

oes itunes need to be logged into your Apple account? I ask as itunes on my PC was probably last used on my iPhone, but this is a backup Iphone 7 my son uses that he can't remember the passcode for. (One of the suggested fixes for 0x... errors is to ... unlock the iphone, connect to itunes and select "trust this computer" :) ).

If you have a backup to restore iTunes must be logged in to the same Apple ID that you had on your phone. But you don’t have to be logged in just to update.

orry for my ignorance, I try to avoid using iTunes as much as possible (& don't get me started about how difficult it is to copy photos from iPhone to PC using Windows Explorer - I've had this issue for years using different PCs, different windows OS versions and different iPhone / iOS models/ versions)

That’s because you are attempting to use an unsupported photo transfer method. This link discusses the supported methods→Copying personal photos and videos from iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your computer

I was able to restore my iPhone now. iPhone 13 on iTunes on Windows 10.

I think it was a general issue on Apples side and its fixed now.

Well, the good news is that Apple has a System Status page→Apple - Support - System Status. The bad news is that it is rarely up-to-date, frequently reporting issues after they are fixed or not until well into the issue time frame (fixed issues are listed for a couple of days with the start and resolution dates). And this specific issue isn’t listed as fixed, either. But still, it’s worth checking any time you have an issue with an Apple service.

Error Analysis by experiement:

I purchased an additional, original, most recent Apple Lightning to USB cable MXLY2ZM/A(Made in Vietnam Model A1480) and tried again with same hardware, port and itune Version 12.12.4.1.

The recovery does work now. Nothing else was changed. So maybe there was a change in the Original Lightning to USB cable and you should try a recent one.

I hope the experience works for others, too.

That error message is a USB connection problem. Possible causes:

  • You don’t have the latest iOS drivers on your PC. Reinstall iTunes to fix it (from the Windows Store)
  • You are using a VPN connection
  • Your firewall or antivirus is blocking the connection
  • You have overloaded the USB bus on your PC with external drives or other devices that take a lot of power

Some things to try:

  • Restart your PC
  • Disable your antivirus and firewall
  • Unplug all USB devices except keyboard and mouse.
  • Start your PC in Safe mode

Some users have had success changing their DNS to 1.1.1.1 (Microsoft) or 8.8.8.8 (Google). If this fixes it your ISP is blocking access to Apple’s update server.

Same for me. Trying with an iPhone 13 Mini. Tried 2 different Windows Computers, 2 different cables and 5 different ports... Ridiculous. iTunes is trash especially on Windows. Do you have this error on a MAC or Windows? Probably have to visit an Apple Store...

I'm 99% sure that its a fault on Apples Server-side, considering how many people had this issue just now in these last 2 days and it was never seen anywhere before.

I've tried multiple PCs, Internet connections, Cables and iTunes from the Windows Store or the .exe

I can't update or restore my iPhone 13 from iTunes over USB on Windows at all. Best we can do is wait and hopefully Apple will fix this soon.

All -

Took the phone into Apple Store. They had never seen the code either.

They hooked it to their mac devices and then they got a new code which meant my software was destroyed... There was nothing they could do to fix it. I had to buy a new phone.

This is obviously pretty frustrating and not the answer that most of y'all wanted. But I had to get a new phone ASAP so I just did it.

Thank y'all for all of the replies and trying to help.

I had the same problem. I tried many times and always the same. Try to upgrade the last version of your OS (o lastest updates), Open iTunes as admin, and try to move the cable or plug (sounds ridiculous but works for me). Something of these things would work for you as works for me. regards.

changing the DNS in my Fritzbox and Win10 did not change anything. I tested with 2 computer, several reinstalls. multiple original cables , but the error 0x80092010 persists, when i try to recover my iphone 7 plus, after i mistyped the pin code during setup. The phone did work fine before the restore mode.

using itunes win Version 12.12.4.1 from Windows Store, as my old itunes version did not support ios 15.5. Seeing the amount of question and random combinations, i agree that this must be an error or planned error on Apple end, to sell more iphones.

If it helps anyone:

Tried restoring an iPad 9th Gen after mistyping the password upon setup. No Windows 10 Machine worked when trying to Update and Restore the iPad giving the  error code (0x80092010) every single time. Tried resetting the hosts files, restarting the laptop and reinstalling iTunes to no avail.

Tried a Macbook Pro running MacOS Monterey (no iTunes) and the iPad has succesfully Updated and Restored via Finder first time.
