Screen is dim every time I switch on my Macbook Air on, but Auto-brightness is off

I've seen several similar posts but not exactly the same as my issue. Every single time I switch my Macbook Air on, the screen is really dim, and I have to go into settings and adjust it back up to almost full brightness (I can't see well if the screen is dim). I have the 'Auto-brightness' setting OFF. It's always off, but still the brightness seems to 're-set' itself every time I switch on. It's nothing to do with low battery or whether the device is plugged in or not. Is there another setting I've missed somewhere? If not this is going to be really annoying - it's also pretty discriminatory towards those with sight impairments.

If you have an Intel Mac, then try a PRAM Reset (not an option for an M1 Mac).

Also, check the Battery System Preference as there is a checkbox to dim the display when using the battery. Even if you set the brightness to maximum, if the laptop logs out or goes to sleep, then when logging back in the display will be slightly dimmed.

"Auto Brightness" responds to ambient light levels. Maybe you need it set to "on".

If all else fails, take it to Apple for evaluation.

Of course you can also reinstall your current OS without disturbing data, settings or apps. But if the problem is caused by a setting, reinstallation won't help. But then again, it won't hurt anything either on a healthy machine. Takes about 40 minutes start to login screen.

My Macbook is an M1 Mac.

I switched off the option to dim while using the battery, so I'll see if this works!
