Apple Calendar and gmail invites

My gmail email address is my main address, and the one I log into all Apple services with. I use the Apple calendar for all my personal work. My Google account is set to sync Mail and Calendar. When I get invitations to the gmail address, frequently my only option is to accept from from my Google Calendar (which I rarely if ever use). I get the ICS file but it does not give me the option to save it into my Apple calendar. I've logged into iCloud and ensured that the "receive event invitations" is set to In-App notifications but that doesn't help.

Any suggestions on how to ensure that I can receive and accept all such invitations in my Apple Calendar?

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately that doesn't address my issue at all. I can see and reply to them; the problem is that I want to accept them into my Apple calendar; not the Google calendar. It does not give me a way to do this. And this happens mainly on my Mac (where I do most of my calendar management) but I have the same issue on the iPhone or iPad.
