Task Bar Icons not opening apps

When I click onto taskbar icons opens up applications folder instead of the actual app so have to click on the app in file manager. I have a Mac mini M1 I also notice when start up the Mac on the log in screen type my password in and then now another screen pops up and have to re-enter my password. I can open up apps directly from the desktop but if save it to the taskbar does not want to open. I have all the updates and not installed any new apps. Was working okay in the morning and a few hours later has been giving my troubles. Thanks for any assistance

Do you mean the Dock? There isn't a taskbar in macOS.

If so, are you holding down the command key or is it stuck down? Cmd-clicking on an item will normally show its location in the file system as opposed to opening it.

If you're not holding it down and it's not stuck, try restarting if you already haven't.

Also, try starting in Safe Mode, then restart normally.

Try rebooting the machine.

Apps have to be in your Application folder.

If the Dock alias are not working drag them off and drag a fresh icon back to the Dock from the applications folder.
