Is there any difference in quality between native Samsung Smart TV Airplay 2 and the Apple TV 4k?

I currently have a Samsung Q60T that supports Airplay 2. I want to mirror my Mac Mini M1 through Airplay to that TV. Can i mirror in 4k resolution in any way? If i buy a Apple TV 4k, will it cast my M1 in 4k to the TV?

Overall, is it better to have Apple TV hardware than native Samsung's Airplay capability? Will it make a difference?

Thanks in advance

Hey pedragorn,

Getting an Apple TV that supports tvOS 14 and later supports 4K video sharing With AirPlay, you can share your 4K videos from the Photos app on your iPhone or iPad to your Apple TV 4K in full resolution. See Use AirPlay to stream audio and video on Apple TV.

You can read more here:

What’s new in tvOS 14 for Apple TV

Take care.

pedragorn,

Certainly. We understand. We'll answer what we can. For part of your question, you'll need to contact Samsung: Contact a third-party vendor

Apple TV 4K specifications can be found here: Apple TV 4K

If you stream 4K video from your Mac running macOS Monterey to an Apple TV 4K, the video would stream in 4K dependent on the video source material, of course.

With an Apple TV 4K, you can also stream directly from that to your 4K television.

We hope this helps.

Take care.

The stutter totally indicates a connection issue. You may have fiber that runs to your house but what is the connection from your router to where the TV and computer reside. There MUST be a very strong Wi-Fi signal where the TV (or Apple TV) is located. You need a tool such as iStumbler that checks how strong the connection is where the TV is located.

I had a similar issue several years ago and had to upgrade my home network, I chose a Mesh Network to ensure I had strong coverage throughout the house. My home happens to be a single story home that is about 2500 sq. ft. and I support about 40 different wi-fi devices including:

  • Macs (3 at last count
  • iPads (2 at last count)
  • iPhones (2 at last count)
  • 5 Apple TVs
  • Direct TV
  • Home Theater Receiver
  • Thermostat
  • Smoker (yes you can control them wirelessly these days)
  • Sous Vis
  • Fans
  • Lights
  • Sonos speakers throughout the house

and the list goes on.

So while you have fiber up to the house, inside your house we don't know what you have?

Sorry for the late response. I have also fiber inside my house to the router directly, but the connection with the TV is WiFi of course. My router is a Unifi Dream Machine, so i don't have an issue connection wise. I just wanted to specify if it's gonna be better with the Apple Tv hardware or the same with Samsung's Airplay 2. My goal is to mirror my mac mini in 4k resolution to my 4k tv. But as i see it caps out at 1080 in the Screen Mirroring options when i try to mirror the display

I wonder if this will change when i Airplay through Apple TV 4k hardware.

No difference in quality on Airplay 2 however if you are trying to decide if you want to get an Apple TV 4K vs using the smart tv functions of your Samsung, I'd go with the Apple TV 4K. It is a much better experience than using a smart tv, plug you get a lot more functionality such as access to your photo library, the Arcade app on the ATV 4K, Apple Fitness plus etc.

Also, if you happen to be in the USA, Amazon has the ATV 4K on sale at the moment for $129, which is a great ($50 off) deal.

thank you very much for your answer. I just want to stream my m1 mac to my tv. With the native Samsung app it stutters a little bit. my Internet connection is not an issue as I have fiber. I suppose it will be better with the Apple TV 4K because it will do all the processing on board bypassing the TV. But the fact is no one knows for sure, that’s my problem. No one can give a definitive answer. I thank you very much though for your answer.
