IKEA Trådfri & HomeKit, other HomeKit comparable systems.

Does a person need to buy the Ikea Trådfri gateway to use Ikea bulbs or outlets with the Apple HomeKit system?

Or, can you just buy Ikea bulbs & outlets or switches, and connect them with HomeKit?

I find it confusing, when, for example, I bought at GE air conditioner, and needed to download a GE app, then I opened it with HomeKit, and HomeKit informed me I had to download some other GE app on my phone to update the software on my air conditioner. That worked, but do I still need to keep two GE apps on my phone? Getting help is not so clear on this. As soon as you move from one company to the other, you usually are told, 'check with the other company.'

It sounds like you're looking for some help determining if you can use your GE air conditioner with Apple HomeKit. We can help.

We checked out GE's support page for their HomeKit compatible air conditioners to see if we could find an answer, and it looks like GE's official word on it is listed here, towards the bottom: GE® ENERGY STAR® 115 Volt Electronic Room Air Conditioner:

Some smart window air conditioners have had Apple HomeKit compatibility in the past. As of 2021, we no longer support Apple HomeKit and our smart air conditioners no longer work with HomeKit. The packaging may indicate it is Apple HomeKit compatible; however, this is no longer the case.

The air conditioners will still work with our SmartHQ app. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

So, from what GE is advising other customers, you will need to use their SmartHQ app to effectively control these units. If you have any additional questions, you may want to reach out to GE.
