VPN/CarPlay issues

CarPlay worked perfectly with my iPhone for the last 6 months through a usb tethered cord. It was connecting to my Ford Fusion with no problems. Now it is not connecting. Both the phone and car say it is connected (and the phone is charging) but it does not display on the screen. Have tried cleaning out the iPhone connection port, changed the usb cord, used the other usb port on the car, resetting the phone, confirmed CarPlay is turned on, confirmed CarPlay is turned on in screen time settings as an allowed app. I have noticed the VPN button continually toggle back and forth when I am viewing my general settings on the iPhone. When I turn it off it reverts back to toggling back and forth on its own. Sometimes the CarPlay display will flicker on and off on the screen for a second and seems to coincide with the VPN button constantly toggling in my iPhone settings. Since I have noticed the VPN issues I have also recognized connection issues to certain app and web sites. Suggestions?

Turn off the "Kill Switch" setting on your VPN app. If that doesn't work, email your VPN provider. I had this same issue, but CarPlay works with my VPN enabled now with the kill switch turned off.

You've definitely taken the right steps in starting to narrow down what's going on. Is your iPhone also fully up to date? Here's how, if you need: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support


  1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
  2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
  3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.


Also, is CarPlay on your Ford up to date? You may need to check with your dealership as to updating the deck.
