Set up Gmail - fails with 'cookies are disabled'

I can't set up a Gmail account on my iPad, I get the message 'cookies are disabled'. I've enabled them on Safari, but still the same. Any ideas?

I’m setting up a friends iPad and had this exact issue. It showed in Mail he had a gmail account but wanted his password re-entered. So I tried it and it proceeded to want to go through the gmail option, asked for the email, then it goes to the cookies disabled message. After a few tries with checking every cookie setting and getting the message I gave up and deleted the account to start new. Did the new account, chose Google, entered his gmail and boom, same cookies disabled message.

reboots, checked settings, rinse, repeat, cookies disabled, yada, yada, yada.

And then I wondered could, having the Chrome app on the iPad be causing this headache? Even though in the Chrome app I did set the default browser to Safari, but maybe it was the culprit.

Well guess what, I deleted the Chrome app from the iPad and it worked! In Mail I went to new account, Google, entered his Gmail and no cookies disabled message, it went straight to asking for his password and worked.

These are the standard installation instructions. Add an email account to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support Can you indicate where you are experiencing this cookies message? Enabling cookies in Safari should not make any difference. Has the account already been created and you are just adding it to the iPad? I've found that using the Gmail app works best for Gmail and it also allows for Push notifications with Gmail that you cannot get with the native Mail application on the iPad.

I've read multiple times here that using the native Mail app on the iPad for Gmail is what I was referring to. There are many reports of difficulty with Gmail and the Mail app. I have multiple mail accounts on my Mail app, but I use the Gmail app for a Gmail account. Using the Gmail app allows me to get my Gmail pushed to the iPad, otherwise you cannot use Push for Gmail in the native Mail app.

It's the same via iPad Settings and when I go into the Mail app. It's an existing account I'm trying to add to the iPad. When I choose add account, I get the options (iCloud, Microsoft Exchange, Google, etc.) and I choose Google. It then says 'Mail wants to use google.com to sign in. The next screen asks for the email or phone, I put the email address in and tap 'next' and then I get the message 'cookies are disabled' / 'Your browser has cookies disabled. Make sure that your cookies are enabled and try again'. I've enabled cookies in Safari, and I've also got Chrome on the iPad, but cookies can't be disabled in Chrome.

I'm sorry, but I've not used the native mail app, and have read that it is difficult. I've always used the Gmail app for the mail. Do you have Safari selected as your default browser? If so, have you tried changing it to Chrome and trying? I would have to defer and see if someone else can answer that may have had experience with using Gmail in the native mail app. I don't recall ever reading about anyone encountering the error you indicate.

I’m not sure why you read the Mail app is difficult, because I’ve found the opposite to be quite true. In fact one of its strong points is it’s ability to handle multiple email accounts and having an, all inboxes, all sent, all drafts, all trash, etc.. Touch any and you see all your accounts emails in each category. You can touch the back button and have the option to examine all email account’s various boxes and folders separately. It really is powerful.

Other (allows manual entries of account settings)

I have three gmail accounts, a couple website accounts and an iCloud account all maintained in a single app.
