How easy and useful is pages? Microsoft word users would be able to open documents sent from Pages?

Word cannot open Pages documents but if you use Pages you can export the document to a Word format before you send it to someone.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Pages, especially if you have Word experience or want compatibility with Word.

If you don't want to pay for Word, another option is LibreOffice. It is free, very compatible with Word and more similar to Word from a learning curve standpoint. https://www.libreoffice.org/

Keep in mind that if you are sharing documents with Word users, all formatting will not be 100% compatible between Microsoft Office and LibreOffice.

The Pages user would have to save the document as a Word document. Word can not natively open Pages documents.
