saving files to desktop

When I create a file in Pages, I prefer to save it to my desktop not iCloud, but I always have to change the "where" location. See attachment. Is there a way that I can make my desktop the preferred location, so I do not have to change the location each time? I am running OS 12.4 and Pages v. 12.1.

I would strongly advise against using your Desktop as the Pages document burial ground.

Create a folder in your Documents folder (e.g. __Pages) so it will appear first alphabetically. SInce Pages remembers the last saved folder location, just perform a File > Save or option+Save As of a new document in that folder location, and the next document you save from Pages will go into that folder by default. Move your Pages documents from your Desktop into that __Pages folder in Documents so their clutter doesn't take up GPU resources to paint those icons.

I do not "bury" my Pages documents on my desktop. Rather, I keep them there until I have time to move them into an appropriate folder in documents, usually at the end of the day. However, Pages does not remember "desktop" when I put it into the "where" but reverts new documents back to iCloud. Thanks for taking the time to assist me.
