How to install update for iPhone 13/Macbook Air?

When I try to connect my phone to my laptop, a window pops up stating that "a software update is required to connect to iPhone."


Although I click install, it doesn't download - it just shows the download bar with no progression. My computer is using macOS 11.6.7, if that's relevant. What should I do to fix this?

It may well be relevant. The first thing to try is using a current MacOS version.
