Macbook always overheats when closed using external display

Is there any way of stopping the macbook overheating and throttling performance when closed using an external display?

Is it possible to turn off the laptop display when an external display is plugged in?

After 1-2 hours of using the laptop closed the fans start to spin up and the processor is throttled so badly that typing in a terminal is slow and any application takes several seconds to respond to clicks. I unplug from my display and use the laptop open and it stops spinning and performance goes back to normal using the same applications.

I either need to be able to run with the laptop open but the screen not in operation so that no application open to there or for a way to prevent this overheating which seems to be a massive design flaw. I can even point a fan at the laptop but this is still not sufficient to cool the device with the lid down.

Hello Andrew_AG,

If you're experiencing temperature and performance issues with your MacBook Pro, you'll want to start by working through these suggestions:

Tips to manage the operating temperature:
- Make sure that you’ve installed all Mac software updates.
- Use your Mac notebook where the ambient temperature is between 50° and 95° F (10° and 35° C). Don’t leave your Mac notebook in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range. You should also use your Mac notebook where the relative humidity is between 0% and 95% (noncondensing).
- Use your Mac notebook on a stable work surface that allows for good ventilation. Don’t use your Mac notebook in your bed, on a pillow, or under bedding.
- Don’t put anything over the keyboard.
- If your Mac notebook has ventilation openings, don't put anything into them.
- Use only Apple-authorized power adapters.
