When I try to facetime, video call my wife's iPhone 12 it goes to my iPad, the facetime call to her drops.

If your wife's Apple ID is signed in on your iPad, it would be expected that the iPad would ring when you try to FaceTime your wife. Make sure her Apple ID is not signed in: Sign in with your Apple ID - Apple Support
Likewise, if you and your wife share an Apple ID, trying to FaceTime her iPhone using her phone number may cause a problem, as both your phone numbers would be associated with the Apple ID. Having you or your wife create a new, unique Apple ID would resolve this issue: How to create a new Apple ID - Apple Support
In either of the above instances, your wife may have issues answering an incoming call on her iPhone.
Should you still have trouble after this, don't hesitate to respond back.
