Images do not send or receive in Messages - Monterey on a Mac Studio M1.

I can see, send and receive images on iPad, iPhone and an older laptop running Mojave, but the newest computer with the newest OS is only showing place-holder rectangles where the images are on my other devices.

I've logged out then in again, opened in Safe Mode, changed my Accountname and library folder to be sure they match, tried the Sync button... no luck so far.

Running out of ideas and looking to try any ideas you all may have been lucky with. This Mac Studio is two days old, so I will bring it to an Apple Store if we can't figure a solution on these pages.

The next best thing for us to having an actual On-Hand experience on this computer is to follow the steps below

Download the Application Etrecheck directly from a well Respected ASC Contributor. And Safe to use.

The application is free or paid from added features.

Run the application with Full Disc Access ( Security & Privacy - Full Disc Access ).

It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.

The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information.

Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last )

We can have a look at the report for possible issues and may have possible suggestions to resolve the issues.

1 - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

2 - Does the issue present in this mode ?

3 - Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.

4 - If not - there could be something in the main User Account playing up. To further isolate this - Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Then log out of the Main User account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.

5 - If the issue is present in the dummy account - then, this appears to be a System Wide issue on the computer.

6 - If after performing each of the above steps is the order that have been presents  and still have issues - please advise for possible further assistance.

Understand, we are all working Remotely from all around the world.

Therefore, we do not have the On-Hands experience the User ( you ) has with this computer.

Hello, P... some good news.

Once I configured a new temporary account, signed in to iCloud and activated Contacts, Messages and Photos,

the system worked as hoped for.

Attachments to a couple of test messages sent correctly and were visible throughout my other devices.

So now we know that the problem is with my Useraccount or home folder, right?

! - Security updates disabled - Security updates are disabled. This computer is at risk of malware infection.

2 - Apple security disabled - Apple security software is disabled. This computer is at risk of malware infection

3 - More than one antivirus app - This computer has multiple antivirus apps installed.

Any combination of the above will come into play with this computer issue. This is a quick view and not my usual line review.

If the User is gong to Reinstall the operating system, IMHO it will not actually fix the issue.

Installing over an existing installation will only replace and missing or corrupted elements of the OS

Really suggest considering a Remove Content. But be sure you understand what this means and have a Time Machine Backup Before hand.

What the line above will do is Remove everything on the computer and install Fresh Copy of Monterey

Give this some though and let us know IF you what to pursue this avenue

Hero of the hour has been Jessica at Apple support in Austin, TX.

After eliminating all the obvious solutions, she hopped onto a screen share, provided a terminal command and that solved half the problem- receiving messages (but not sending them.)

A while later, we trashed three tiny database files from Library/Messages, restarted the Mac Studio and Voila!

So great to be able to work with the logical thinkers and problem solvers on Apple's side of the sales counter.

We do-it-ourself-ers get lucky indeed when we get to work with a team like the one Jessica and her colleagues serve on.

Thanks to everyone on this morning's journey who share your hope that no problem is insoluble!

UPDATE:

I phoned Apple Support (since I still have 7 weeks of phone support due to new machine. )

A pretty sharp tech walked me through previous steps but understood I had been through it already for the most part.

Now re-installing all of Monterey OS which will take another 3 hours.

Kind of skeptical that will be the answer, but going to go a step at a time.

Will check back in a few hours from now, or on Thursday morning.

If we do manage to figure an answer, I want to be sure to share it with all who can use it!

Thanks for your reply and the link about user account/home folder.

That process was successfully achieved with no issues,

but the problem of "Images do not send or receive in Messages" persists.

As described above, on my iOS devices the images show up perfectly; also on the 9-year-old MacBook running OS Mojave 10.14,

but this new Mac Studio running OS Monterey 12.4 is only showing place-holder rectangles, as shown in the above screen shot.

I have seen other discussions about the "no images in Message" issue I'm experiencing, but so far have not found an answer

Thanks for the quick and logical reply, P!

I did try the restart in Safe mode a few days ago, but am sure it would not hurt to try that trick again, followed by a normal boot.

Will update here whether the results are good or not, hah.

Your diagnostic suggestions are very sensible:

subtract all the factors we can, then add them back one by one.

Appreciate your efforts to help me out with this!

Yes, thanks, P. Phillips for all your counsel and helping me learn more about 21st century Mac maintenance.

Once the Apple techs said we'd be re-installing Monterey, I just accepted the inevitability of it and went forward, also sealing up some of the leaks and patching some cracks showed up by the EtreChek review. Sure enough, none of that fixed the issue, but by eliminating the easier fixes, it let them drill down until we finally got to the "kernel of the matter", hah.

Ready to face the future with this super-fast, cool and quiet machine for the rest of the decade (fingers crossed).
