External display?

Hey so I am trying to connect my hp 2011 display as an external display for my MacBook Air M1 through an HDMI to DVI adapter. But it says input signal out of range. So when I go ahead and change the display settings in the MacBook settings for the hp display(I change the resolution) nothing happens, the display doesn't update even though I have changed the settings. It still says the same thing but it doesn't even try to update the settings(the message says on display without even blinking when I change the settings). I replug and the same thing. How do I get it to update?

Sounds like the display is simply not able to display the signal it's getting. Even at 1600x900 which is an odd resolution.

The Mac is getting as far as detecting the display and knowing its there. Then its up to the display to actual show the signal it's getting. There's no reason to believe the Mac is not sending anything.

I would test with a different display, just to make sure the connection is sound and the fault is in fact with the display.

I tried choosing different resolutions it just doesn't send it to the display, it doesn't update anything.

It says HP 2011x on the display. Maximum resolution I don't know but it says recommended is 1600x900 which I tried.

I am changing the resolution on the external display, you know you go to display, choose the external one from the list (then set it to use as an extended display) not main display and then I choose the resolution for it from the list and click done. It updates in the little preview but nothing happens in the display it's like it's not sending anything to it.
