Apple Mail Not Downloading Gmail Messages

Suddenly, one of of my gmail accounts doesn't download messages. This is happening on both my iMac Pro, MacBook Pro, and iPhone. No errors on the computers; the iPhone says "the mail server imap.gmail.com is not responding."

My three other Gmail accounts are unaffected.

Also, from Apple Mail I can SEND emails from the affected Gmail account, I just can't receive them.

I feel like this may have something to do with my Avast VPN? Timing-wise, I tried to turn it on around the time the one Gmail account stopped working (what can I say, I love Love Island UK).

I deleted and re-added the Google account, no luck. At my wits end.

Hello cdowlatshahi,

Double check your email settings from Google. When you set up the Gmail account, did you use the steps from Google? https://support.google.com/a/answer/9003945?hl=en#zippy=%2Cset-up-gmail-with-mail-on-a-mac

Additionally, did you use the automatic or manual set up? Review this article from Google: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7126229?hl=en&visit_id=637920208361566915-2365043080&rd=1#zippy=%2Cstep-change-smtp-other-settings-in-your-email-client%2Cstep-check-that-imap-is-turned-on%2Cmy-email-client-is-crashing-or-emails-are-taking-too-long-to-download

"Important: To avoid temporarily locking yourself out of your account, make sure you don't exceed 2500 MB per day for IMAP downloads and 500 MB per day for IMAP uploads. If you're setting up a single IMAP account on multiple computers, try taking a break between each setup."

Also, from the same article,

"Step 1: Check your password

If you have these problems or can’t sign in, first check to make sure you’re using the right password.

Step 2: Try these troubleshooting steps

  • Update your email client to the latest version.
  • Use an App Password: If you use 2-Step Verification, try signing in with an App Password.
    • Important: If you sign in with OAuth, use your regular Google password.
  • Allow less secure apps: If you don't use 2-Step Verification, you might need to allow less secure apps to access your account.
  • If you recently changed your Gmail password, you might need to re-enter your Gmail account information or completely repeat your Gmail account setup on your other email client.
  • If the tips above didn't help, visit https://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha and follow the steps on the page.
  • The email client's sign-in method might be insecure. Try signing in directly on the Gmail app.
  • Make sure your mail app isn't set to check for new email too frequently. If your mail app checks for new messages more than once every 10 minutes, the app’s access to your account could be blocked."

This may explain why the downloads started and stopped again. Also, since this is only happening with one account, you may need to contact Google for further help with this.

Cheers!

Hey cdowlatshahi,

Removing and adding an account back can usually resolve those odd issues. Since it didn't, take a look at the additional steps that may help here: If you can’t receive emails in Mail on Mac - Apple Support

Be sure to check if the account is trying to receive a large email, especially with it not receiving on all of your devices.

Let us know how it goes.

Take care!

Yeah that article didn't help. This is what the Connection Doctor looks like, as Mail tries to download messages from one of my Gmail accounts:

This does not happen with my other accounts.

Since yesterday, by itself, emails started downloading again, and then they stopped downloading (just hanging as you see in the screen recording), and then started again.
