Texts from one person disappeared

Texts from my husband suddenly unavailable today - only his, all others still there. I don’t think I erased them but… Erasing the whole phone and restoring from backup seems overkill - what could have happened and how can I fix it. I did not block him - checked all of the contacts to make sure. Test messages since about 2 pm have worked but all earlier ones aren’t there. Help
