How do I contact original owner to return a lost device?

Can Apple act as an interlocutor to facilitate communication for the purpose of reuniting the bereft owner of a lost iPhone with their erstwhile device, while protecting the privacy of both concerned parties?

No.

If you found a lost device, hand it in to the police or a lost property office if you found it in a public space such as a shopping centre.

Sometimes an owner of a Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch, supported AirPods might have sent a message to the device in lost mode. See if a message appears on the screen.
