Can Not Set Up Gmail Account on iPad

I am unable to add a gmail account to my iPad. I go to Settings > Mail > Add Account and then click on Google. It says "Settings want to use google.com to sign in." I click continue. It brings up a window so I can sign into my Google account. My account is listed and I simply click on it, I don't enter a username or password at this point. Everything seems OK and I click Save. The account is added. However, when I check my email it says, " Account Error: Gmail: Cannot Get Mail. No password provided for "Gmail." Please go to Mail Account Settings and enter a password." I click Settings. It takes me back to the email account settings for that account. There is nowhere to enter a password! Just Name, Email, Description and Outgoing Mail Server. What am I doing wrong?

Google have changed their authentication requirements for Google Mail mail accounts configured for password authentication - and for non-Google mail clients, now requires use of an App Specific password for each mail client/device.

You will need to generate a unique password for your iPad Gmail account - that will differ from your normal Google Account Password. AOL, Yahoo, Google, Microsoft now all use App Specific Passwords when using anything other than their own email client Apps.

If you need to generate an App Specific Password, you’ll need to log-in to your Google Account management webpage - using a web browser - and generate the Password from the appropriate account security page.

No, this isn’t a particularly new requirement from Google. For devices with an established email account, you may not yet have triggered the change; any attempt to update configured account settings may trigger the need to use an App Specific password with that device.

The iPad email setup wizard allows Google password authentication - but it is Google that determine which password (i.e, your Google Account or Google App Specific password) is required to authenticate.
