Sounds like you installed some form of Adware.

Use EtreCheck to remove it.

Nobody generally does.

It gets installed when you think you are installing something else that you downloaded from a seemingly legitimate site.

Only ever download apps from the App Store or from the software developer's website.

Another excellent adware/malware removal app is the free version of Malwarebytes. It was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community.

Yes, that was it. I purchased it as I felt it was as good a tool to have to evaluate my system as there is. I run it after every system update and upgrade so to be sure all is well.
