I followed the instructions for a screen shot for my 8 Plus. After severl tries of pushing the home button and the up volume button nothing happens
Looks like you are not following the instructions in the link above for your model of iPhone.
Press the Home and Side button simultaneously to take a screenshot on an iPhone 8. The Side button is on the right side of the Phone as you are looking at the screen. Do not use either of the volume buttons.
